Is it the end of the world? What is Climate Change? How can we prevent it? Find out in our Llama Talks with the renowned Engineer Emiliano Paz, general manager of Grupo Proteger. *

How’s Climate Change?

In my days there was doubt of the Climate Change, now the footprint it leaves is evident and can be measured. The unit of measurement is Tons of CO2.

Since 2015-2016, the issue of climate change has been taken more seriously and we see how it affects the planet earth.

In the early 2000s the deadline to see the consequences that human beings on earth made was up to 2100 years, today, that deadline is in 2033 or 2034.

Honduras signed the COP21 treaty in Paris. The whole planet committed by 2038 to reduce 1.5 degrees temperature on planet earth. By consequence the 55% of greenhouse gas emissions.

With the United States and China alone, both signatories to the treaty, we managed to reduce 55% of CO2 emissions, but there are 185 countries working for this goal.

What actions do human beings that are affecting?

They’re a lot… the use of fossil fuels, such as vehicles, diesel, but also the consumption of meat due to the water footprint.

Bean Cooking Data: Puts a metal spoon in the pot causes beans to be cooked in half the time. That represents a big saving on electricity for our Honduran society that cooks beans constantly. Putting the metal spoon in the pot transmits the heat to the spoon and the spoon transmits the heat to the entire bean core, so this is how it works.

Data charging the cell phone: Charging the cell phone for a long time as a habit represents a significant expense. Charging your cell phone for 40 minutes should be enough.

Tip: The luck of contagion is very important. It seems insignificant to say no to straws or plastic bags, but it’s not. This attracts more and more people and to the extent of doing small daily actions, the effect becomes multiplier.

Which countries are examples of environmental care?

Sweden by 2030 is going to stop relying on fossil fuels.

Costa Rica has 310 days generating 100% renewable energy.

Portugal 2 months generating renewable energy just like Uruguay which is between 4 and 5 months in the same vision.

Curitiba is the city with the largest amount of green area per capita in square meters on the planet. It has approximately 55 and 58 m square green areas per person.

What is the role of Proteger?

Our goal is to make people self-sustaining, have solar panels, urban orchards, among others.

People have a bad perception and think that a solar system for an average house is very expensive and it is not. It is more expensive to buy a 60-in. LED TV. In addition, it is important to consider that it is an investment that will be beneficial in the long term.

Is it only the responsibility of governments to be aware of Climate Change?

False, it’s everyone’s responsibility, but if the government isn’t doing its management, it’s important as citizens to ask to do so.

Honduras needs good Hondurans; we need to acquire new habits and improve as a society.

* Proteger which means Projects, technology, and renewable management seeks to promote renewable energy projects trying to generate well-being in our clients.
